The Bronx Museum is honoring its most famous street with a three part art exhibit entitled “Intersections”, featuring archives and work from 15 different artists for its 100th anniversary. What other street could age with such style and class but Grand Concourse?
Known for its distinct architecture, Grand Concourse was inspired by the Champs Elysees in Paris. It was mainly designed to give Manhattan residents access to the parks in the North Bronx.
The first part of the exhibit, taken place July 20th emphasizes the street’s history. During the summer, the exhibit will look at the present, within the fall season, the future.
Anthony Greene of the Bronx Historical Society stated, “The Grand Concourse has not only the largest, but also probably the highest quality of art-deco architecture that we see in the country, really outside of places like Miami Beach… And it really brings that sense of elegance and a sense of high class to this borough.”
Bronx Museum Director commented, “We have wonderful artworks that are depicting this experience,” explained Bronx Museum Director Holly Block. “Most people don’t even realize we had grand palatial palaces, mansions on the Grand Concourse in the early days.
