Keith “Guru” Elam, MC of popular Hip Hop duo “Gang Starr” suffered a cardiac arrest this past weekend and slipped into a coma, according to several reports. Miss Info, newscaster of WQHT 97.1 FM , otherwise known as “Hot 97” posted on her blog site that Guru will undergo surgery and is currently in an undisclosed New York hospital.
Gang Starr was an East Coast Hip-Hop group that consisted of MC “Guru” , DJ 1, Mike Dee, and a few other producers. The group split in 1989 and Guru was the only member who carried on the name Gang Starr. Guru soon would get in touch with Waxmaster C , now known as DJ Premier who sent him a beat tape. The two would then join to collaborate with one another to release their first single “Words I Manifest”. The two artists created a unique sound blending jazz, rap, and hip- hop to make their music. Despite not being from New York, Gang Starr’s sound was deeply rooted in the NYC streets.
Their first album together titled “No More Mr. Nice Guy” debuted in 1989. Gang Starr went on to make seven more albums including their last album in 2006 “Mass Appeal: Best of Gang Starr” which included their critically acclaimed singles “Step in the Arena” , “Skills”, “Take it Personal”, “Just to Get Rep”, “Mass Appeal”, and more. Their single “Jazz Thing” featured on the soundtrack of the Spike Lee joint “Mo’ Betta Blues” in which their sound helped to establish “jazz rap”.
