“Henry Hudson 400 Stomps On Some New Ground”- By: Chastidee Davis

The Henry Hudson 400 Foundation was established in Amsterdam and New York in 2006 to celebrate the 400^th anniversary of Henry Hudson. The foundation’s goal is to not only recognize this event but to also connect both of these cities’ effervescent cultures by reaching out to their societies.

Diversity plays a major role amongst this organization, which is why it’s no surprise to see how Hip Hop has been able to influence some of the events sponsored by the Henry Hudson 400.

Browsing on their website you will find a list of events in which one of these events is a contest labeled “Street Dance Competition for Kids Ages 12-18”. The event is an opportunity for boys and girls within this age range to showcase their talents. The event will be located at Amsterdam’s Club Escape.

First prize for the “Street dance” Contest will be a trip to New York and participation in the Henry Hudson 400 Talent Swap with performances, and tours. The Henry Hudson 400 Talent Swap is sponsored by the Holland America Friendship Foundation and the City of Amsterdam.

Well known Dutch choreographer, Timor and Eszteca of the Dutch television show “So You Think You Can Dance”, will be in attendance along with Jayson “Mighty Mouse” Vasquez and Ephrat “Bounce” Asherie from New York who will be performing at the venue.

The audience will be filled with several talent scouts who will be searching for models, extras, singers, dancers, and youth with “beat boxing” and presentation skills. There will also be beauty workshops, a game corner, shows by DJ KID and DJ Abstract with the entire venue being hosted by Big Ed.

From the inner city streets of New York City to the streets of Amsterdam we’re able to see our youth evolve with Hip Hop.
